High Cholesterol Life Insurance

Most people who have High Cholesterol and need life insurance will generally not have a problem getting cover and in most cases we are able to get High Cholesterol life insurance at standard rates so with no increase in premium. With all applications for High Cholesterol life insurance you would need to know your latest Cholesterol readings as well as provide details of any medication being taken (e.g. name of medication and dosage). A Cholesterol reading of up to 6 would usually be accepted at standard rates with no premium loading and should also be accepted online without needing medical evidence from your GP or a medical.

Applications for High Cholesterol life insurance where there have been issues such as:

  • Changes / increases in medication recently
  • Readings above 6
  • More than 2 medications being taken
  • High BMI

These issues will usually result in some additional underwriting and further medical information being required for High Cholesterol life insurance. If any of these issues are bad enough to be seen as a problem by life insurance underwriters then there may be an additional loading applied to your premiums due to the increased risk.

If you already have High Cholesterol life insurance in place or have had special terms imposed in the past on an existing policy then it is usually worth reviewing your cover to see whether any savings can be made based on your current circumstances.

High Cholesterol Critical Illness Cover

Critical illness cover for people with High Cholesterol is also generally available and especially where the condition is mild with good control through medication or diet. High Cholesterol critical illness cover rates can vary where there are other related medical conditions, such as:

  • Diabetes (Only Type 2 Diabetes considered)
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Angina
  • Underactive Thyroid
  • Stroke / TIA

Underwriters will need to know your most recent reading, medication (e.g. name of medication and dosage) and any related conditions (as above) when assessing levels of risk for High Cholesterol critical illness cover. As a general rule for anyone with High Cholesterol looking for critical illness cover there will be a requirement to provide further medical evidence from your GP or to complete a medical / nurse screening.

If you already have High Cholesterol critical illness cover in place, have been declined cover in the past or have had cover accepted on special terms then it will be worth reviewing your cover to ensure that you have the best cover in place based on your current circumstances.

High Cholesterol Income Protection

As with the other insurance products above, income protection for people with High Cholesterol is generally readily available and can even be accepted at standard rates with no exclusions. High Cholesterol income protection underwriting will always be stricter than life insurance or critical illness cover because of the increased risk of claims.

Applications for High Cholesterol income protection will need to be supported with details of your latest readings, medication (e.g. name and dosage) and any related conditions or complications. If you have any issues in recent years then you may find that rates for High Cholesterol income protection will be increased or some policy exclusions may apply. Some related conditions such as Diabetes will mean that income protection could be declined all together but it is worth checking with us to see what we can do for you.

If you already have High Cholesterol income protection in place, have been declined previously or have cover that has been accepted on special terms then it will often be worth reviewing that cover based on your current circumstances, especially if there has been an improvement.

Case Study 1

  • Client: Male
  • Age: 43
  • Smoker status: Non-smoker
  • Medical condition: Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • Cover date: June 2019
  • Product type: Increasing life insurance
  • Cover amount: £200,000
  • Cover term: 25 years
  • Premium: £36.68

We were approached by this gentleman on the 23rd April when he completed an enquiry through diabetes.co.uk. Our advisor Suzie then got in contact with him to discuss his life insurance needs and his pre-existing medical conditions. At this point he confirmed that he was looking for £200,000 over a 25-year period to cover his mortgage and to leave something behind for his family. He then went on to explain that he was a type 2 diabetic with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and had previously had bowel polyps removed. Suzie then took this information and applied the gentleman to one of our mainstream providers and managed to secure him £200,000 of life insurance cover for a 25-year period for a monthly premium of £36.68. This is an amazing premium considering the gentleman’s medical history and the amount of cover he wanted. Overall, the he was very pleased that we were able to find him cover at a price that he could afford as he now has peace of mind that his mortgage and family will be protected should he pass away unexpectedly.

As a whole, we were delighted that we were able to get protection for another customer, so that he now knows that he is covered should the worst happen. It is a great feeling when we find cover for a customer, especially if they have been struggling due to a pre-existing medical condition. We are passionate about protecting families and we want to help as many people as possible to get covered.

Case Study 2

  • Client: Male
  • Age: 48
  • Smoker status: Non-smoker
  • Medical condition: MS, Type 2 Diabetes and raised cholesterol
  • Cover date: 30th April 2019
  • Product type: Life Cover
  • Cover amount: £50,000
  • Cover term: 20 years
  • Premium: £38.64

We were approached by this gentleman on the 24th April 2019 when he completed an enquiry through our site. Our advisor Greg then received his enquiry and got in touch with the gentlemen to discuss his life insurance needs and his pre-existing medical conditions. At this point he disclosed that he was looking for £100,000 of cover over 20 years, and that he has mild MS, type 2 diabetes and raised cholesterol which he takes medication for. Greg then took this information and researched the best provider for him. He then contacted the gentleman with some quotes, however unfortunately, due to the combination of MS and type 2 diabetes, the premiums for £100,000 of cover were out of the gentleman’s budget, so he decided to reduce the cover amount to £50,000. Therefore, on the 30th April 2019 Greg managed to secure the gentleman £50,000 of cover over 20 years for a monthly premium of £38.64. This is an amazing premium considering the fact that MS and type 2 diabetes add a significant loading onto the premium, as well as the added risk of raised cholesterol.

Overall, we were overjoyed with the outcome as the gentleman now has the peace of mind that if he were to pass away, his family would be protected. The gentleman was also pleased with the result as he now has the protection that he previously did not have, and he has peace of mind that his family are protected.

Most Common Questions:

How does having High Cholesterol affect Life Insurance?

Usually there will be no additional loading or increase in premiums where High Cholesterol is a problem but is well controlled with medication. Some people are also put on High Cholesterol medication as a preventative measure which will generally be viewed by underwriters as no issue. For High Cholesterol life insurance, critical illness cover or income protection you will always need to provide details of your most recent readings and medication (e.g. name and dosage).

What if I have High Cholesterol life insurance in place already?

If you already have High Cholesterol life insurance, critical illness cover or income protection then it could be worth reviewing that cover, especially where:

  • Readings have improved (e.g. more stable or reduced)
  • Medication has reduced
  • Quit smoking
  • Lost weight (reduced BMI)

In most cases we see where we are reviewing an existing High Cholesterol life insurance policy we can reduce premiums and especially where cover was previously accepted with special terms. You may also need to review your existing cover if your personal circumstances have changed such as moving house, changing jobs or having children.

Why should I pay more for High Cholesterol life insurance?

If your life insurance has been accepted and offered at a higher rate than normal because of your High Cholesterol and other issues relating to your current health then there will be some risk related issues that underwriters will have identified. High Cholesterol life insurance on its own is usually not an issue and causes no problems as far as the application process is concerned, however if your lifestyle is not particularly healthy and you have other issues then there could be an increase to the premium you pay.

'Simply the best' This company is the top of the insurance business. I found it after having a bad experience with one of the biggest insurers.I thought I would struggle to get insurance. I filled in the enquiry section on there site, and waited for the reply. When it came I was very impressed with the manner in which the information was taken and the speed I got the quote, which was very reasonably priced.I would not hesitate to use this company again and would highly recommend them to family and friends. 4.9
