Cancer Travel Insurance Guide:
Having Cancer or if you have had Cancer in the past, it may be difficult to obtain Travel Insurance and quotes can vary drastically from one provider to another. It is important to answer all questions accurately and honestly to ensure that you have cover in place in the event of having to make a claim. Cancer Travel Insurance applications are based on a number of factors, such as:
- Date of Diagnosis
- Treatment (i.e. Radiotherapy or Chemotherapy)
- Hospitalisations (usually past 12 months)
- Other conditions (anything related or non-related to your cancer)
These questions form part of what is called a 'medical screening process' which is how the risk for your Cancer Travel Insurance policy will be assessed and premiums are calculated. Failure to answer these questions accurately and honestly, may result in a claim being declined in the event of a claim relating to your Cancer during your trip or for Cancellation.

Top Tips for Cancer Travel:
As with any form of foreign travel, it is important to be prepared before you travel and even more so if you have a pre-existing medical condition such as Cancer. Most people only have a small checklist, such as:
- Print tickets / Boarding passes
- Check passport dates
- Pack sun cream / sunblock
If you have a pre-existing medical condition such as Cancer, then there are a few more things that you may need to consider.
Seek Medical Advice before you travel
It is important to speak to your GP, Doctor or a medical professional to ensure that you are fit enough to travel and to understand the risks involved with foreign travel.
Take sufficient medication
You should always make sure that you have more than enough medication you would need for the period that you are going to be away for. It is also advisable if you are travelling with a family member or a friend to get them to carry some medication with them in case of loss of luggage. You should also check to see whether there are any restrictions with your chosen destination on the medications that they allow.
If you are currently taking strong painkillers then you should also check whether you need a license to carry them with you.
Apply for an EHIC
You can also receive a certain level of free cover for European travel if you apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) before you travel.
Apply Online: https://www.ehic.org.uk
It is also important to check what you will be covered for with an EHIC and to take out an adequate Cancer Travel Insurance policy for your trip.

Case Study 1
- Client: Male
- Age: 31
- Smoker status: Non-smoker
- Medical condition: Testicular cancer
- Cover date: 23rd September 2019
- Product type: level life insurance
- Cover amount: £500,000
- Cover term: 30 years
- Premium: £20.30
We were approached by this gentleman on the 5th September 2019 when he completed an enquiry on our website. Our advisor Karl then contacted him to discuss his life insurance needs and any pre-existing medical conditions that he may have. At this point he disclosed that he has had stage 1 testicular cancer 6 years ago, of which he is now clear and isn’t receiving any treatment. The gentleman then went on to explain that he was looking for £500,000 of cover over a 30-year period as well as critical illness cover to cover his mortgage and protect his family. After learning this, Karl then researched the best provider for the gentlemen and applied to one of our mainstream providers. Unfortunately, the quotes for the critical illness cover were a little over the gentleman’s budget and therefore he chose to just have the level life insurance. As a result of this, Karl managed to secure the gentleman £500,000 of cover over a 30-year period for a monthly premium of £20.30.
This is an amazing outcome as the gentleman was able to get the protection that he and his family need for a very reasonable premium, especially due to the amount of cover that they gentleman was looking for and his previous medical history. Both us and the gentleman were delighted with this result as he was able to get the protection that he needs within his budget so he knows that his family are covered should the worst happen.
Case Study 2
- Client: Male
- Age: 49
- Smoker status: Smoker
- Medical condition: Bowel cancer and depression
- Cover date: 24th September 2019
- Product type: Level life insurance
- Cover amount: £15,000
- Cover term: 20 years
- Premium: £35.34
We were contacted by this gentleman on the 28th June 2019 when he completed an enquiry on our website. Our advisor Sam C then called him to discuss his life insurance needs and his pre-existing medical conditions. At this point he disclosed that he was looking for £150,000 of cover over 20 years with a maximum budget of £40pm, and that he has suffered from stage 1 bowel cancer, of which his last treatment was over 2 years ago. He also mentioned that he has suffered from minor depression and has also been advised by a doctor to reduce his alcohol consumption in 2010. Sam C then took all of this information and applied to one of our mainstream providers and got some quotes for the gentleman. However, unfortunately these quotes were too expensive for his budget due to the fact that his bowel cancer was so recent . Therefore, Sam C had to reduce the amount of cover that the gentleman was looking for to £15,000 so that it fit within his budget. Therefore, Sam C managed to find £15,000 of cover for 20 years for the gentleman for a monthly premium of £35.34. This is a brilliant premium considering the difficult combination of medical conditions that they gentleman has suffered from, especially the bowel cancer as that can pose a significant risk to the insurers.
As a whole, the gentleman was over the moon that we managed to find him cover, as he now has peace of mind that his family are financially protected. Furthering this, we are also overjoyed that we managed to find him cover as it can sometimes be tricky to find cover for people who have had cancer, especially if they have other medical conditions as well.
