We are true independent specialists in this area. We have over the years built up an unparalleled level of knowledge regarding which insurance companies are competitive for which medical conditions and can, therefore, ensure you are directed to the most competitive for your particular circumstances.

We have access to specialist insurers and can even offer cover to clients who have previously been declined life insurance due to their medical history.

    1. We can help
    2. How much we could expect the life insurance to cost (including cover for your medical condition)

If you are happy with the consultation and wish to proceed we would then apply to the most appropriate insurance companies based on your circumstances to obtain the exact terms. If you decide to proceed with a policy we receive a payment from the insurance company. You will not be charged a fee for our services.

As we only receive payment when you take out a policy you can be assured that we do our utmost to find a policy that is competitive and suitable to your needs.

Insurance companies employ medical underwriters who will look through your answers to the medical questions on the life insurance application form and decide if they have enough information to provide a quotation or if they need to write to your GP or Specialist to obtain more information.

Once they have the information they require they will then decide on how much to charge you for the insurance. Various factors will be taken into consideration such as:

  • How serious is your condition
  • How well do you control your condition
  • Are there any other medical conditions or concerns present
  • How much risk does the insurance company wish to take
  • How many clients do the insurance company have, that have the same medical condition
  • What experience has the insurance company had with this condition in the past

As you can see a lot of the decision process is dependent on that particular insurance companies situation at any given time and this is why you need a true expert in this field to ensure you are directed to the most appropriate life insurance company for your condition.

We have seen instances where an insurance company has been highly competitive for Diabetes Life Insurance one month and then highly uncompetitive the month after. This can simply be due to the fact they feel they have exposed themselves to enough Diabetes risk and therefore price themselves out of attracting any more Diabetes Life Insurance clients. At The-Insurance-Surgery.co.uk we are in constant touch with Senior Medical underwriters from all the major insurance companies so we are constantly up to date with their underwriting criteria.

When underwriting a medical condition Life Insurance companies can decide to do the following:
  1. They may offer 'Ordinary' rates - This means you will be accepted for the life cover at a standard premium with no increase. Examples of this could be for:
    • Well controlled High Blood pressure
    • Extremely well-controlled diabetes
  2. They may 'load' the premium. This means they will charge an extra premium due to the medical condition. The extra premium could be anything from an extra 50% to 1000% dependent on the perceived risk of the illness. Examples of this could be:
    • Diabetes
    • Multiple Sclerosis
    • Crohn's  Disease
    • Life Insurance after a heart attack
    • Life Insurance after a history of Cancer
  3. They may decide to 'postpone' the cover - This means they will not offer cover at this particular time but will consider offering cover in the future. Examples of this could be:
    • While you are waiting for an operation
    • While you are waiting for a diagnosis
    • While undergoing cancer treatment
  4. In certain circumstances you may be 'declined' cover - This, unfortunately, means that you are unable to obtain 'full' cover (we can, however, offer alternative cover) - Examples of potential declines are:
    • Terminal illnesses
    • Very poorly controlled diabetes with addition complications

Quick Guide to how different conditions are treated for life insurance underwriting

The following is a very basic guide to which illnesses fall into the above categories. We would strongly suggest speaking to us about your particular circumstances before making any decisions regarding life insurance as we really will look at every case individually to see if we can help, for example, diabetes can potentially fall into all four categories dependent on the severity, length of diagnosis and quality of control.

It is also worth noting that we can often help people obtain cover when they have previously been declined by other companies.

'The best broker you can get' Sarah Angel. An angel in name and in facts. She's the customer representative that has spent months in the months in helping me getting the deal I got. Always patient, never given up looking for the right policy and me. Frankly, I never thought a lot about brokers but this company is a blessing to people that cannot get insurances by themselves for health reasons. Thank you. 4.8
