Most Common Questions
Diabetes Travel Insurance Guide:
In the same way as Life Insurance, having Diabetes will affect the premiums that you pay for Travel Insurance which is why it's important to fully disclose all facts about your condition. Diabetes Travel Insurance is assessed based on several considerations, such as;
- Treatment (i.e. Metformin, Insulin or diet)
- Smoker status
- Any Hospital admissions (usually in past 12 months)
- Blood Pressure or Cholesterol medication
- Diabetes complications (i.e Neuropathy, Retinopathy, Nephropathy etc.)
- Other conditions (i.e. Heart Attack, Angina, Kidney Disease, Liver Damage, Vascular Disease etc.)
This is all part of the medical screening process for obtaining your Travel Insurance policy for Diabetes to make sure that you have the right cover in place should anything happen on your holiday. If you haven't completed the medical screening correctly or accurately then you are at risk of not being covered if anything happens relating to your Diabetes during your trip.

Top Tips for Diabetes Travel:
For most people, preparing for your holiday is a simple checklist of things like:
- Have I got my passport and is it in date
- Print Tickets / Boarding Passes
- Buy suntan lotion or sunscreen
- Pack Suitcase
If you have Diabetes and are travelling abroad or even staying in the UK, then there are a few more things you will need to think about to prepare for going away.
Visit your Doctor
Have you seen your Doctor or Diabetes Specialist to ensure that you have all of the proper vaccinations to protect against disease?
If you have not got the correct vaccinations then you leave youself open to the risk of disease and you may invalidate your travel insurance policy. Your GP or even your Travel Agent should be able to inform you about whether a vaccination is required and which ones are recommended for your chosen destination.
Pack Diabetes medication and equipment
Diabetes medication (i.e. Insulin) is vitally important so make sure that you pack more than you would normally need, and it is advisable if travveling with a partner or friend to pack some spare for you (incase of loss of luggage). It is also advisable to ensure you keep some insulin with you in your Hand Luggage as the temperatures in an aircraft hold can be extremely low, potentially causing liquid to freexe.
Take your Blood Sugar testing equipment (even if you think you don't need it) with you as well as Insulin can be absorbed quicker in warmer temperatures.
You should also pack a full list of your medication in case you need to replace anything while you are away or if you are taken ill. It is also advisable to carry a small first-aid kit with you and a supply of food and drink in case of any delays or disuptions during travel.
Apply for an EHIC
You can also receive a certain level of freecover for European travel if you apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) before you travel.
Apply Online: https://www.ehic.org.uk
It is important to check what you will be covered for with an EHIC and to take out an adequate Diabetes Travel Insurance policy to provide cover for other eventualities, such as loss of Insulin.
